plantar fasciitis
Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a taught band of connective tissue which extends from the heel to the ball of the foot. Its primary role is to act as a shock absorber during activity. This tissue can become inflamed and painful with chronic overuse and mild tearing.

This condition affects about 10% of the population and is slightly more common in women. The most commonly reported symptom is sharp pain at the base of the heel which may refer to the arch of the foot. Heel pain is typically worse after long bouts of inactivity such as sleeping or prolonged sitting. The inflamed tissue will shorten and contract during these times and when we stand up to place a load on the foot, the tissue is stretched causing pain.

The cause of plantar fasciitis can be multifactorial. Some things that contribute to the condition are tight calf muscles, weak foot muscles, being overweight, big increases in running mileage or activity, and poor footwear.

At Turquoise Trail Therapeutics we take a 3 pronged therapeutic approach to this type of injury.

  • We will assess the biomechanics of the foot and lower limb by watching you walk. We will also take a close look at your footwear and make recommendations.
  • Chiropractic adjustments will be performed to improve joint motion in the foot and ankle. Myofascial release techniques will be performed on the musculature affecting the leg and foot. Our goal is to improve flexibility, relieve pain and maintain healthy joints.
  • Muscle tightness and weakness causes discomfort and alters normal joint function. Your chiropractor will target tight or weak muscles with specific therapeutic stretching and strengthening to help increase tissue flexibility, build strength and ease pain. Healthy strong and flexible muscles may help prevent re-injury.
  • If you or someone you love has foot pain, please contact us to set up an appointment for a full examination and treatment.
